With everything going digital these days, it is no wonder that YouTube reaches more US adults aged 18 to 34 years than any cable network, as stated on the company website. But you may not know other interesting things about sharing giant video. For example, an idea for its development stems from one of the founders being unable to find images of a specific event. This event in particular was Super Bowl malfunction of the wardrobe of Janet Jackson in 2004 and the tsunami in the Indian Ocean, held later this year. Here are five things you may or may not know YouTube:
1. YouTube would not exist without PayPal.
When eBay bought PayPal, its first employees received bonuses. Three of these employees, Chad Hurley, Steve Chen and Jawed Karim, took the money to start their own business. And, so, YouTube began in 2005.
2. YouTube began as a dating site.
The first version of YouTube was called Tune In Hook Up, and was a site of similar meetings to Hot or Not. Its founders have decided to go another route, partly because of the aforementioned film Super Bowl and partly because attachments limits prevented Chen and Hurley share a video from a dinner.
3. About 80% of YouTube traffic is outside the United States.
We do not really think much about what happens outside our own realm sometimes, but America is just a small audience in the global YouTube audience. It is located in 61 countries in 61 different languages.
4. You can disable YouTube comments.
YouTube comments are probably some of the most amusing comments on the web, but they can also be hateful and dangerous, especially for young children. Among other parental control features, YouTube also gives parents the ability to disable comments altogether.
5. You can buy episodes of TV shows on YouTube.
As for streaming episodes of your favorite shows on a Netflix account, Hulu or Amazon, YouTube offers viewers the opportunity to purchase full-length, high-quality hit television shows episodes. You can buy what he calls a season pass, which can be quite expensive, or an individual episode that you missed during its live broadcast on television.
